Jean-Pierre urodził się w 1951 roku w belgijskim Engis, jego brat Luc trzy lata później w Awirs. Wspólnie reżyserują, produkują oraz piszą scenariusze własnych filmów. Zaczynali od kina dokumentalnego. W 1975 roku stworzyli firmę produkcyjną Dérives, w ramach której wyprodukowali blisko 80 filmów dokumentalnych. W 1994 roku powołali do życia kompanię produkcyjną Les Films du Fleuve. Uznawani są za czołowych przedstawicieli europejskiego kina autorskiego. Na swoim koncie mają wiele prestiżowych nagród, m.in. canneńskie Złote Palmy za najlepszy film („Dziecko”), najlepszy scenariusz („Milczenie Lorny”) i najlepszą reżyserię („Młody Ahmed”).
Jean-Pierre was born in 1951 in Belgian Engis, his brother Luc three years later in Awirs. Together, they direct, produce and write their own screenplays. They started with documentary cinema. In 1975, they created the production company Dérives, under which they have produced nearly 80 documentary films. In 1994, they founded the production company Les Films du Fleuve. They are considered the leading representatives of European author’s cinema. They have many prestigious awards, including the Cannes Golden Palms for the best film (“The Child”), best screenplay (“Lorna’s Silence”) and best direction (“Young Ahmed”).

Tytułowy bohater nowego filmu braci Dardenne to zdolny, błyskotliwy belgijski 13-latek. Podczas gdy jego rówieśnicy spędzają czas na beztroskich zabawach, Ahmed wolne chwile przeznacza na studiowanie Koranu, gorliwe modły i rozmowy z lokalnym imamem. Chłopak szybko staje się bojownikiem dżihadu. Bracia Jean-Pierre i Luc Dardenne podejmują jeden z najważniejszych problemów, któremu musi stawić czoła dzisiejsza Europa. Jest nim próba reakcji na religijny fundamentalizm w postaci radykalnego islamu. Film zdobył nagrodę główną za reżyserię na tegorocznym festiwalu w Cannes.

The title character of the new Dardenne brothers film is a talented, brilliant Belgian 13-year-old. While his peers spend their time on carefree games, Ahmed spends his free time studying the Koran, zealous prayers and conversations with the local imam. The boy quickly becomes a jihad fighter. Brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne tackle one of the most important problems facing Europe today. It is an attempt to respond to religious fundamentalism in the form of radical Islam. The film won the main award for directing at this year’s Cannes festival.
