Reżyser i scenarzysta. Studiował w Rzymie (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia) i w Londynie (Slade School of Fine Arts). Jego twórczość ma charakter osobisty, wypływa z rodzinnych doświadczeń, z obserwacji życia społeczeństwa włoskiego. W 1965 roku zadebiutował filmem fabularnym „Pięści w kieszeni”, który wywołał powszechne zdumienie. Religią oraz systemem edukacji zajmował się w filmie „W imię ojca” (1971), natomiast strukturami wojskowymi w „Marszu triumfalnym” (1976). „Diabeł wcielony” w 1986 roku wywołał skandal w Cannes, natomiast „Wyrok” przyniósł mu w 1991 roku nagrodę Srebrnego Niedźwiedzia na festiwalu w Berlinie. W 2014 roku Bellocchio otrzymał Nagrodę Specjalną David di Donatello za całokształt twórczości.
A director and screenwriter. He studied in Rome (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia) and in London (Slade School of Fine Arts). His work is personal, it comes from family experience and observation of the life of Italian society. In 1965 he made his debut with the feature film “Fists in the Pocket,” which caused widespread amazement. He dealt with religion and the education system in the film “In the Name of the Father” (1971), and military structures in the “Victory March” (1976). The “Devil in the Flesh” caused a scandal in Cannes in 1986, while “The Conviction” brought him the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Festival in 1991. In 2014, Bellocchio received the David di Donatello Special Award for lifetime achievement.

Oparty na faktach „Zdrajca” w zaskakujący sposób podejmuje temat mafii, a dzieje się to za sprawą charyzmatycznego bohatera – Tommaso Buscetty – który złamał omertę, czyli zmowę milczenia. Dzięki jego zeznaniom doszło do skazania 362 przywódców Cosa Nostry. Zrealizowany z rozmachem film Marco Bellocchio już od pierwszej sceny chwyta za gardło, wciągając w mroczny świat zbrodni. Nagrodzony kilkunastominutową owacją na festiwalu w Cannes, gdzie startował w konkursie, rekonstruuje najmroczniejszy czas w dziejach walk z mafią, ale też stawia pytania o znaczenie lojalności, honoru i zdrady.

Based on facts, “The Traitor” in a surprising way takes up the subject of the mafia, and this is due to the charismatic hero – Tommaso Buscetta – who broke the omertà, which is the conspiracy of silence. Thanks to his testimony, 362 leaders of Cosa Nostra were convicted. The film with a flourish Marco Bellocchio grabs the viewer’s throat from the first scene, drawing him into the dark world of crime. Awarded with a ovation of several minutes at the Cannes festival, where it took part in the competition, it reconstructs the darkest time in the history of fighting the mafia, but also raises questions about the importance of loyalty, honor and betrayal.
